What is SIP Trunking?

SIP is Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) which is used to create and control the communications sessions that are the basis of VoIP telephony. The word Trunking describes the connection between telecommunications systems.

SIP Trunking is a term from circuit-switched telecommunications of a virtual connection between on-premises PBX system and the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Basically it enables the end point’s PBX to send and receive calls via the Internet. As SIP is applied for the signalling protocol for multiple real-time application, SIP trunk is able to control voice, video and messaging applications
